ROAD TO LIFE

On my way home, stuck in the usual Lagos after-work traffic just a few days before the COVID-19 lockdown was effected.

In the midst of all the honking, near hits, actual hits, and the hundred of tail lights ahead of me, it struck me that roads are very similar to life.

We are all told to look for the road that leads to life, never being told that the road we ply to look for life is life.

Lemme explain;

For starters, everyone is driving or headed to a particular destination the same way every human with each step is closer to their destination.

This highlights the fact that being ahead doesn’t mean you will get to your destination any quicker than other people as their destination might just be closer than yours.

We are all moving at a different pace, this could be determined by the lane we find ourselves in, the capacity of our car, our driving skill, and the quality of the roads. This is equatable to the career path we choose, the skill we pick up, our relationships, and how much work we are willing to put in.

The fun of the ride to your destination is also determined by the quality of the car. The comfort experienced in a Mercedes Benz S-Class cannot be compared to that of a Kia Picanto (well… David killed Goliath). The quality of the life we live is affected by decisions we make daily in regards to our health, mental peace, the pursuit of purpose & fulfillment. These things affect the way and state in which we get to our destinations as humans.

The fulfillment in life is not in the destination we arrive at, but rather in the joy of the journey, cos at the end, life is but a journey same as my drive back home from work.

In summary, life is not a race or competition. It will be foolish to race against someone I don’t share the same destination with

Never think too highly of yourself because you’re ahead of the next person, they might just be closer to their destination than you think.

By the way, I slept in traffic on this fortunate or should I say unfortunate evening, the car in front of me was hit by a truck and that’s how everything was at standstill for almost an hour, I missed out of the 1st half of United’s game. In retrospect, c’est la vie. Some delays aren’t prepared for or even foreseen, they just happen due to no fault of ours. I guess if everything in life was predictable, it will be one very boring and unworthy journey.

Learn to enjoy the ride called life, for we knoweth not how close to or far from our destination we are.
